A rural fight over server farms is quietly repricing Senate control

"Maine's data center revolt will decide who controls the Senate" ran on The Verge this morning. Kalshi has Republicans holding the Maine seat at 36%, down 3 points, on 306,784 contracts in a day against a lifetime of under 7 million. That's roughly a twentieth of the market's entire history clearing in one session.

The polls don't look like a 36%. An AARP survey had the Democrat up by three. Marist had him up by four. Fox had them tied, with most Maine voters still telling pollsters they expect the Republican incumbent to win anyway. The crowd is siding with the polls, not the gut read of the electorate.

What The Verge adds is the mechanism. A sleepy fight over humming server farms in rural Maine has become the local grievance the challenger is riding, and the incumbent is wearing. Not Trump, not inflation, not abortion. Zoning hearings.

If that read holds, the chamber flips on an issue no national desk was tracking in September. Watch whether the Maine market drifts under a third before Tuesday, and whether other rural data-center states show the same pattern on Kalshi.

Will Mary Peltola win the Alaska Senate race in 2026?

MARKET ODDS
70%
Peltola leads Sullivan in both the AARP and NYT/Siena polls, with a ranked-choice simulation showing her barely clearing the majority threshold, per Newsweek. The price reflects that polling edge plus early-voting pace exceeding the last midterm, offset by headlines about the governor questioning certification and ordering a criminal probe into her campaign. A certification standoff or fresh scandal would pull it down; a called race lifts it toward resolution.
